TEDDY bears will request a ticket of leave from cuddling duties this weekend to attend a celebration in their name at Gleniffer Brae.

The Wollongong Conservatorium of Music's annual Teddy Bears' Picnic tomorrow will attract teddies of all shapes, sizes, colours, textures and ages to Gleniffer Brae's grounds overlooking Wollongong Botanic Garden.

Conservatorium principal Graham Drayton said it was the third picnic held as part of the monthly music mornings.

The mornings were devised to open the conservatorium to the public and give students the chance to perform.

Mr Drayton said the theme events, such as the Teddy Bears' Picnic and March into the Con for the March music morning, encouraged people to interact with the concept.

``As we get to other parts of the year we theme it according to the weather," he said.

``But (it's) well established and it's great to see people from the community share in the activity.

``We have people drive down from Sydney for it.

``It's to emphasise to people in Wollongong this is their conservatorium and it's great to be able to come here and hear high quality music."

Mr Drayton said visitors to the conservatorium for tomorrow's show could see a performance from a new student or, at the other extreme, a musician who had a PhD from the Moscow Conservatorium.

``They hear a huge range of music from classical to jazz to contemporary.

``(For some people) it's a nice social occasion and for the students it gives some of them their first opportunity to perform in front of an audience in an environment they are used to and on an instrument they play every week."

The Saturday at the Con - Teddy Bears' Picnic is on tomorrow from 10am to noon.

There will be prizes for the smallest teddy, largest teddy, oldest teddy and most furry.
